At Benson Dental in Sioux Falls, SD, our team has years of experience doing fillings for patients of all ages. We use the most reliable materials and tools available to ensure your procedure is safe, comfortable, and successful. Advances in dentistry have significantly improved the process of getting fillings — a single filling can take as little as 20 minutes.
When a tooth is damaged or cavities start to develop, dental fillings can restore your tooth to its normal shape and function. Dentists will consider fillings before any other treatment option because a filling repairs the damaged area while leaving the majority of your healthy tooth intact. Fillings also help prevent infection or decay from spreading, eliminating the need for more procedures later on.
Who needs dental fillings?
Fillings can treat a variety of dental conditions. Below are a few of the most common reasons people get fillings:
- Broken or chipped teeth
- Removing tooth decay/preventing decay from spreading
- Cosmetic fixes
Types of Fillings
Fillings can be made of amalgam, composite, gold, or porcelain, depending on your needs and preferences. Amalgam (silver fillings) and composite resin (white fillings) are the two most popular types of fillings at our practice:
- Amalgam fillings are made of metal, which means they are very strong. Usually, the filling material is a mixture of silver, copper, and tin that is bonded by mercury. Millions of patients have received amalgam fillings with excellent results, and after reviewing the available scientific evidence, the FDA ruled that these fillings are completely safe for adults and children over age 6.
- Composite fillings are made of a resin material (plastic), which matches the exact color of your teeth. Composite fillings are ideal for patients who don’t want their fillings to be visible or those who want an alternative to amalgam fillings. Composite fillings are usually more expensive than amalgam, but patients are always very happy with the natural-looking results.
How do fillings work?
All fillings work by literally filling in a chip or cavity in the tooth. Dr. Benson will likely remove the decayed or damaged part of the tooth before placing the filling material. Next, he will mold and shape the filling to look and feel like your natural tooth did. Once the filling is set, it will be strong and ready for chewing right away – the filling bonds to the natural tooth, creating a solid hold that lasts for years. You may receive local anesthesia for your procedure. If your mouth is still numb when you leave, we recommend avoiding very hot foods and eating very carefully until the medication wears off.
