About Dr. Benson
Dr. Benson is originally from Minnesota but moved to South Dakota in 1972 when his father opened Benson Dental. As a child, he used to visit his father at his dental office and enjoyed helping with X-rays in the developing room. Growing up around a dental office spurred his interest in dentistry and inspired him to pursue a dental career. It was an easy decision to return to the family practice after finishing school.
The atmosphere at the office is extremely welcoming and family-oriented, and Dr. Benson loves working in such a tight-knit practice and community. He finds it incredibly rewarding to work in a field that allows him to provide patients with high-quality care and the best results. Hearing recognition from his patients after they visit the office affirms that he chose the right career.
Dr. Benson attended Mankato State University — now called Minnesota State University Mankato — for his undergraduate degree. After earning a Bachelor of Science in biology in 1984, he initially joined the Marine Corps to become an aviator. However, he decided he was more interested in dental school, so he chose to attend Washington University School of Dental Medicine in St. Louis. In 1989, he completed his Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry (DMD) degree and went on to train in a residency program in Denver. After completing his training, he chose to move home to South Dakota to join his father’s practice. After working together for almost 20 years, Dr. Benson’s father retired, and he took over the family practice.
Outside of work, Dr. Benson enjoys spending time with his family and his dog. In addition, he likes visiting the lake and taking his boat out on the water. When the weather allows it, he loves skiing and snowmobiling.
